Like Mt. Aso in Kyushu, Mt. Asama is a well-known active volcano. The smoke billows up hundreds of metres into the sky. The plume of smoke in this photograph, estimated to be of medium height (about 500 metres), was shot facing north from Karuizawa at the southern foot of the mountain . The peak on the left outer rim of the volcanic crater is Mt. Kurofu (2404m). Due to a violent explosion, Mt.
