KUMAMOTO, Japan - A small-scale eruption is observed at 1,506-meter Mt. Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture on April 14. A local meteorological observatory issued an alert banning entry to within a 1-kilometer radius of the volcano's crater.

Special Olympics flames merged into one

MATSUMOTO, Japan - A ceremony to merge two Special Olympics flames -- one brought from Athens, Greece, and the other from Mt. Aso, Kumamoto Prefecture -- is held Feb. 19 at Matsumoto Castle in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture. The resulting flame will be carried through two routes to Nagano, the site of the Special Olympics World Winter Games beginning Feb. 26.

The eruption occurred at 11:43 a.m. at the No. 1 Nakadake crater, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. Mt. Aso's volcanic alert level was raised to 3 on a scale of 5, with people urged not to approach the mountain. Volcanic ash has blown more than one kilometer from the crater and reached a height of about 3,500 meters, the agency said.
