Sony to pay 1.6 bil. yen in retirement benefits to Ohga

TOKYO, Japan - Sony Corp. plans to pay 1.6 billion yen in retirement allowances to honorary chairman Norio Ohga (file photo), who quit as a board member in January, according to a company letter sent to shareholders by June 4. Ohga, 73, who served as Sony president from 1982 to 1995, played a key role in establishing the CD format, codeveloped with Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V. of the Netherlands and introduced in 1982.

Philips, Waseda Univ. to develop 'personal channel' TV server

TOKYO, Japan - Royal Philips Electronics N.V. of the Netherlands and Waseda University are jointly developing a household server to enable TV viewers to watch any program at any time. Waseda University Professor Wataru Kameyama (C) leads the research team, with Philips Japan Ltd. researcher Loys Belleguie (R) and radio station director Soichiro Ushio (L) playing key parts in the project.
