Crawler-type mobile robot developed by NEDO and Tohoku University

A research group from the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and Tohoku University announced on the 26th that they have developed a crawler-type robot that can move continuously in all directions. It is expected to be used as a driving mechanism for moving objects such as electric wheelchairs and mobile navigation robots. In the past, "omni-wheels," which can move in all directions by combining three or more wheels, were developed, but these wheels had limitations in overcoming steps and could not move smoothly on soft surfaces due to their small footprint. The robot has a simple structure consisting of two motors required for omni-directional movement and a minimal power transmission system including screw gears, making it easy to maintain. Thermoelectric power generation module developed by NEDO and NIMS.

The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Aisin Seiki, and Ibaraki University announced on April 21 that they have developed a thermoelectric power generation module, which is composed of an alloy of easily available elements such as iron, aluminum, and silicon, and converts temperature differences into electricity. The company has developed a prototype communication device that incorporates the module, and confirmed that it can generate electricity and communicate with a temperature difference of 5 degrees Celsius. The temperature and humidity information was transmitted via Bluetooth, a short-range wireless communication standard, and was successfully displayed in real time on a tablet terminal screen. IHI's ocean current power generation system demonstrator "KAIRYU

On the 25th, IHI unveiled its underwater floating power generation system demonstrator "KAIRYU" (photo) at its Yokohama Works (Isogo Ward, Yokohama City). It is being developed as part of a project by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), and generates electricity by turning 11-meter diameter fiberglass turbine blades underwater with the power of ocean currents. Compared to the previous operation, the autonomous control program that adjusts the tilt of the turbine blades and the floating structure during operation has been improved, and rectifier plates have been added so that the ocean currents will hit the blades more efficiently. Power generation efficiency is 50-70%, which is higher than that of solar power (12%), onshore wind power (20%), and offshore wind power (over 30%). Double Giken's Communication Tool for ALS Patients

Double Giken's Communication Tool for ALS Patients

Double Giken has developed a technology to identify the words a patient thinks from the blood flow in the brain and project them on a screen for ALS patients who cannot move their eyelids or fingers. The technology is based on a device that uses near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to determine "yes/no" from brain activity. The patient selects one word at a time and only the vowel sound of the word to be communicated, and the number of words is used to analogize the candidate words to be communicated and show them on the screen. The system, which consists of a personal computer and a terminal, will go on sale in September at the earliest. It was developed with the support of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) in collaboration with Professor Naoki Tanaka of Toyo University and others. NEDO devises terminals that respond to body temperature

TOKYO, Japan - Photo released by New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Corp. (NEDO) on Feb. 20 shows a prototype information terminal that becomes activated by the touch of a human hand. The terminal adopts NEDO-devised large-scale integrated (LSI) circuits that require electric current of as low as 0.5 to 1 volt for operation, according the affiliate of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
