Located near the Tigris River that bisects Baghdad, the museum's old building was first built in 1869, during the Ottoman era. In 1970, the al-Baghdadi Museum was opened in the old building after renovation. It includes 385 statues representing more than 77 scenes featuring folk crafts, trades, professions, local customs, and street life.
