63rd national ski championships opens in Nagano

NOZAWA ONSEN, Japan - The 63rd national ski championships opened at Nozawa Onsen ski resort in Nagano Prefecture on Feb. 20. A total of 1,837 athletes and ski officials from 47 prefectures are taking in the event, which will run through Feb. 22. Foreign skiers rescued in central Japan

Photo taken at 8:34 a.m. on Jan. 13, 2016, in Iiyama, central Japan, shows foreign skiers, believed to be Finnish, who were rescued by police after becoming unable to move on a steep slope the previous day. Lajunen wins World Cup nordic combined sprint

NOZAWA ONSEN, Japan - Finland's Samppa Lajunen approaches victory in a World Cup nordic combined sprint meet on Feb. 8. Lajunen nailed Tuesday's longest leap and then shook off a challenge by Olympic champion Bjarte Engen Vik of Norway in the cross country leg at Nozawa Onsen for his sixth victory of the season.
