'Super Eco-Ship' launched in Sasebo

FUKUOKA, Japan - The ''Super Eco-Ship'' tanker Nadeshiko Maru, an environmentally friendly vessel that is driven by electric motors, was launched in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture on Sept. 11. The 749-ton oil tanker, built with assistance from the Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology Agency, uses a contra-rotating propulsion system driven by two electric motors, with electricity supplied by four generators. Compared with diesel engine ships, the design supposedly improves energy efficiency and reduces the emission of carbon dioxide by about 10 percent.
