KOFU, Japan - Hirofumi Nakagomi, mayor of Minami-Alps in Yamanashi Prefecture, receives the news that UNESCO has decided to add Japan's Southern Alps mountain range to its list of biosphere reserves, known as eco parks in Japan, at the city hall around 1 a.m. on June 12, 2014. The 302,474-hecatre region straddles Yamanashi, Nagano and Shizuoka prefectures. UNESCO also decided to add the Tadami beech forest in Fukushima Prefecture to the list.

World's 1st commercial hybrid-train operations begin in Japan

NAGANO, Japan - A ceremony to mark the start of operations of the world's first commercial hybrid train is held at JA Nakagomi station in Saku, Nagano Prefecture, on July 31. The electric motor-diesel engine hybrid train emits much less air pollution than non-hybrid trains because it relies on a propulsion system combining a motor powered by rechargeable batteries and a diesel engine. The batteries are charged whenever the brakes are applied.
