This photo captures the northern part of Nagasaki City and the entrance to Nagasaki Port taken from the mountain behind Fukusaiji Temple. The red brick building in the center is Nakamachi Church constructed in 1899 on the site where the residence of the lord of the Omura Domain used to be. Therefore, this photo is presumed to have been taken between 1896 and 1899 when the Fortress Zone Act was implemented and it was prohibited to take photos of Nagasaki city. The roof of the main hall of Fukusaiji Temple is visible at the bottom of the photo. The brick building on the right is the Tobacco Public Corporation. The tragic state of the Kitagata cho of Motosugun of Gifu prefecture which was near the seismic center. According to the Gifu Hibi (Gifu Daily), In Motosugun, several thousand houses were destroyed, Naka aza Nakamachi of Kitagata-cho has been totally destroyed, and there are no cities without houses destroyed, and several hundred are dead. Taken around 1872 by Ueno Hikoma, this is a family portrait of Omura Sumihiro, 12th lord of the Omura Clan, who also served as Nagasaki Magistrate. This was taken soon after he resigned when the feudal domains were replaced by governmental prefectures in 1871.
