Blizzard in Hokkaido

KUSHIRO, Japan - Photo taken in the town of Nakashibetsu, Hokkaido, on March 4, 2013, shows flowers and soft drink offered at the site where a car a woman and her three children were riding in was buried under snow on March 2. They were confirmed dead later that day. A blizzard hit Hokkaido and the northeastern Tohoku region over the weekend.

1st visa-free flight made to Russian-held islands

NAKASHIBETSU, Japan - A resident of Kunashiri Island, one of the four Russian-held islands off Hokkaido claimed by Japan, welcomes a group of Japanese nationals at the island's airport on Oct. 29. The Japanese delegation made the first visa-free flight to one of the disputed islands to attend a ceremony to mark the construction of a diesel power plant by the Japanese government.
