This march has been called by the Madrid Forum Against Violence Against Women (Foro 25N), which has organized it every year since 1997 on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, under the slogan 'Citizen Unity and response to institutional violence'. The aim of this march is to call for the "unity" of society against male violence and to demand that the public authorities act "more effectively and in a more decisive manner". November 25 was chosen in 1999 by the UN to commemorate the assassination in the Dominican Republic in 1960 of the Mirabal sisters, political activists who opposed the dictatorship of the then dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. Sumo legend Taiho dies

TOKYO, Japan - File photo shows sekiwake Taiho (C, front) and his supporters after he earned his first championship at the Kyushu tournament in November 1960. Taiho, who was later promoted to yokozuna and whose 32 tournament championships are the most in sumo history, died of heart disease at the age of 72 on Jan. 19, 2013.

Hayato Ikeda

Born on Dec. 3, 1899 in Hiroshima Prefecture and deceased on Aug. 13, 1965. Ikeda, a bureaucrat-turned politician, served as prime minister from July 1960 to November 1964 and laid the basis for Japan's rapid postwar economic growth. During his tenure, Japan became a member of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in 1964 and staged the Olympic Games in Tokyo the same year. (Photo was taken on Dec. 21, 1963)
