France: Fireworks Fuel Apartment Fire in Paris’s 20th Arrondissement

A fire fueled by fireworks or mortar explosions completely destroyed an 80-square-meter apartment on the top floor of a social housing building on Rue des Couronnes in Paris's 20th arrondissement late Tuesday, September 1, prompting the evacuation of the building and mobilizing 90 firefighters and around 30 vehicles. Three people suffered minor injuries and smoke inhalation, no one was reported missing.

Japan: Fire Erupts at Quake-Damaged Paper Mill in Kumamoto

A fire broke out during demolition work at the Nippon Paper Yatsushiro Mill in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture, on Thursday, September 3. When the earthquake hit in July, an 80-meter chimney at the factory collapsed, killing nine employees. Since late August, workers had been removing the broken tip of a separate chimney that remained standing after the earthquake.
