OSHU, Japan - Shohei Otani, a pitcher with Japanese Pacific League baseball club Nippon Ham Fighters who became the second player to sign a 100 million yen contract ahead of his third season out of high school, attends a Coming-of-Age ceremony in his hometown city of Oshu, Iwate Prefecture, on Jan. 11, 2015, a day before the Coming-of-Age national holiday. Cattle shipment ban lifted

OSHU, Japan - Photo taken on Aug. 25, 2011 shows Maesawa beef cattle, one of the finest beef brands in Japan, in Oshu, Iwate Prefecture. The Japanese government lifted its ban on cattle shipments from Iwate, Fukushima and Tochigi prefectures the same day, saying sufficient measures are now in place to ensure that livestock are protected from radioactive contamination. With the latest move, cattle shipments will be resumed for all four prefectures that were instructed by the government between late July and early August to stop cattle shipments.

OSHU, Japan - Beef cattle in Oshu, Iwate Prefecture, are pictured on Aug. 1, 2011. The Japanese government the same day ordered the suspension of all shipments of beef cattle from the prefecture after a number of cattle raised there were found to be contaminated with radioactive cesium. Iwate is the third prefecture, after Fukushima and Miyagi also in northeastern Japan, to be ordered by the central government to suspend all beef cattle shipments.

Award-winning writer Miyoshi dies at 76

MORIOKA, Japan - Award-winning writer Kyozo Miyoshi (file photo taken in Feb. 1977) died of a stroke May 11 at a hospital in Oshu, Iwate Prefecture, his family said. He was 76. Miyoshi, whose real name was Hisao Sasaki, published ''Kosodate Gokko'' (Play Nurturing), based on his experiences as a teacher at small, remote schools, which won the prestigious Naoki literary award in 1977.
