SAPPORO, Japan - Engineers from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Port and Airport Research Institute created a state of liquefaction (photo) by simulating an earthquake at an experimental airfield in Otaru, Hokkaido, on Oct. 27. The earthquake was simulated by sequential blasts over two minutes of 1.8 tons of explosives buried in 580 locations, according to engineers who took part in the project. The experiment showed that there were no signs of liquefaction in areas injected with water-solidifying chemicals, they said.

The group is becoming popular since it released a compact disk in November 2002 of material on the life of Shakuson, or Buddha, as well as human existence. SAPPORO, Japan - David Aldwinckle, a 37-year-old U.S.-born resident of Hokkaido who is a naturalized Japanese citizen, points at a ruling by the Sapporo District Court on Nov. 11 ordering the operator of a bathhouse in Otaru, Hokkaido, to pay a total of 3 million yen in compensation to him and two other foreigners for refusing them admission because of its policy of rejecting foreign customers.

SAPPORO, Japan - David Aldwinckle (R) enters the Sapporo District Court on Nov. 11 to hear a ruling on his lawsuit demanding 6 million yen in compensation for being refused entry to a private bathhouse in Otaru, Hokkaido. The court ordered the bathhouse to pay a combined 3 million yen in compensation to Aldwinckle, a 37-year-old U.S.-born local resident who became a naturalized Japanese under the name of Debito Arudo, Olaf Karthause, 39, of Germany, and Ken Sutherland, 38, of the United States.
