Special Olympics flame ignited in Tokyo

TOKYO, Japan - The Special Olympics flame is ignited in Tokyo in a ceremony held in front of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office on Aug. 22. The flame, ignited in Athens June 29, was carried to Tokyo via Seoul. The Special Olympics will be held in Shanghai Oct. 2-11 with about 7,000 people from 169 countries and regions participating.

Wilfred Kirwa led the challengers home 29 seconds behind, ahead of Felix Kangogo, who rounded off the podium in 2:11:10. In the women's race, Chepkech broke the tape in 2:27:04 after surging away from her competitors from the 40km mark in the event staged on a looped course in the southern part of the Kenyan capital.
