MABALACAT CITY, Philippines - File photo taken in October 1944 shows a Japanese "kamikaze" attack airplane taking off from the Mabalacat airfield in the Philippines. A ceremony praying for world peace was held in Mabalacat City north of Manila on Oct. 25, 2014, the 70th anniversary of the first suicide air attack deployed by Japanese forces against U.S. warships during World War II. About 150 Japanese and Filipinos attended the ceremony.

Hideki Tojo

Born on Dec. 30, 1884 and died on Dec. 23, 1948. Tojo was army general and served as prime minister from 1941 to 1944. In July 1940, Tojo was appointed to the post of army minister and pushed for the conclusion of the tripartite pact with Germany and Italy. Following his taking office as prime minister in October 1941, Japan made a sneak attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941 (Dec. 8 Japan time). In July 1944, he was removed from office. Just before being arrested as a class A war criminal, he attempted to kill himself on Sept. 11, 1945. Tojo was indicted by the International Military Tribunal and was hanged on Dec. 23, 1948.

The document suggests Tokyo police let Richard Sorge, a wartime Soviet spy based in Japan, remain at large in order to decode the ciphers he and other agents were using before they arrested him in October 1941.
