Temperatures hit July levels in some places in Japan

TOKYO, Japan - Sohgo Security Services Co. unveils a cutting-edge security guard robot at a shopping mall in Tokyo's Odaiba waterfront district on Nov. 27 ahead of its formal debut there in mid-December. Standing 1.3 meters high and weighing 90 kilograms, the robot -- tentatively named ''Reborg-Q'' -- can go on patrols on behalf of human security guards, detecting fires and issuing alarms, as well as video-taping its surroundings with a camera on top of its head, the company said.

Japanese cities experience summer-day weather

TOKYO, Japan - A boy and a girl enjoy bathing at Odaiba seaside park on Tokyo Bat on May 1. Cities in Kanto and eastern regions of Japan had summer-like weather with temperatures topping 30C due to effects of warm winds coming in from south, meteorological agency officials said. Yamanashi Prefecture, west of Tokyo, recorded 33.4C, Otsuki in the same prefecture logged 32.5C, and Shizuoka, Shizuoka Prefecture had 32.0C.

Kenzo Tange, noted Japanese architect, dies of heart failure

TOKYO, Japan - Internationally acclaimed Japanese architect Kenzo Tange (in file photo pictured in 1989) died of heart failure at his home in Tokyo early March 22, his family said. He was 91. His works include the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima, the National Gymnasium Complex for the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, the master plan for the 1970 Osaka Exposition, the Tokyo City Hall Complex and the Fuji Television Building in Tokyo's Odaiba waterfront area.
