In Tokyo, winds of 144 kilometer per hour -- the strongest ever observed in the capital -- were recorded early in the morning.

TOKYO, Jan. 7 Kyodo - Using mobile phones to reserve seats on limited express trains run by private railways in Tokyo is fast becoming popular among passengers keen to avoid lining up for tickets at the stations. The system is seen spreading in a few years' time. Odakyu Electric Railway Co. began the service in July last year and Central Japan Railway Co. is set to introduce the service for its Shinkansen bullet train lines in the fall of 2003.
