World's oldest man dies in Fukuoka Pref. at 114

TOKYO, Japan - Yukichi Chuganji, 114, the oldest man in the world, died Sept. 28 at his home in Ogori, Fukuoka Prefecture, his family said Sept. 29. Chuganji, born in 1889, became the oldest man in the world when Antonio Todde, a 112-year-old Italian living in Sardinia, died in January 2002.

FUKUOKA, Japan - Yukichi Chuganji (file photo), a Japanese on record as the oldest man in the world, marked his 114th birthday March 23 in Ogori, Fukuoka Prefecture. Unlike last year when celebrations were held for his entry in the Guinness Book of Records, Chuganji had a quiet birthday this year, surrounded by family including his oldest daughter, Kyoko, 73.

Piece of mortar found on Sanyo Shikansen tracks

OGORI, Japan - Photo shows an 8-kilogram piece of mortar found Dec. 1 on the Sanyo Shinkansen Line bullet-train tracks inside a tunnel in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Tunnel inspectors found the fragment, which had apparently fallen from a 3-meter-high wall in the tunnel between Shin-Shimonoseki and Asa stations. No accidents were reported immediately.

World's oldest man turns 113 in Fukuoka, Japan

FUKUOKA, Japan - Yukichi Chuganji (in file photo) on record as the oldest man in the world marked his 113th birthday on March 23 in Ogori, Fukuoka Prefecture. Chuganji joined the world's oldest woman, Kamato Hongo of the southwestern Japan city of Kagoshima, who recently marked her 114th birthday, to put Japan's southwestern main island of Kyushu on the global map for longevity.
