In Minneapolis, the shooting sparked several days of demonstrations. On Friday, January 9, hundreds of protesters marched through downtown and gathered outside the Canopy by Hilton hotel believed to be hosting ICE agents, staging a noise protest and calling for federal agents to leave the city.

A powerful winter storm driven by a bomb cyclone battered the Midwest and Northeast, bringing strong winds, snow, ice and dangerous travel conditions. Buffalo, New York, recorded wind gusts of up to 75 mph, prompting officials to urge drivers to stay off the roads due to near-zero visibility. Millions were placed under winter storm and high wind advisories, with lake-effect snow, icy roads and whiteout conditions reported in several states.
