Kazakh eagle hunters in the Altai Mountains of western Mongolia pose with their trained golden eagles during a photo session on October 26, 2023. Clad in traditional fur garments and perched on horseback, the hunters embody a centuries-old nomadic tradition known as “berkutchi,” where raptors are used to hunt foxes and hares in the harsh mountain landscape. This photo series documents both the daily life and ceremonial moments of the hunters, capturing their deep bond with their eagles and the unique skills passed down through generations. A beggar in front of a gate

A beggar in front of a gate

This is one in a series of glass slide photographs. An old man with a bamboo stick and a child are sitting by the gate of a big temple, perhaps Chion-in. The child has a drum, suggesting that he is a kakubeijishi (lion dance) performer.==Date:unknown, Place:unknown, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number98‐21‐0]

Actors in court-noble attire

Actors in court-noble attire

Three people wear ori-eboshi hats. The man on the right wears an hitatare (bib), part of formal court dress. This is probably a coming-of-age rite for the boy in the middle. The man on the left holding a fan is probably the boy's father. Old photographs whisper many stories.==Date:unknown, Place:unknown, Photo:Usui Shuzaburo, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number94‐31‐0]

The Two Venerable Images of Buddha,Sensoji Temple

The Two Venerable Images of Buddha,Sensoji Temple

This is exactly the same as photograph #385 sold by the Kinbei Studio, which means that it was probably taken by Kusakabe Kinbei. Six children are playing near the Buddha statues. Other photographs show people sitting on the lotus bases, suggesting that these statues were a familiar and approachable presence to the common people. The tree in the background is a gingko tree said to be about 700 years old. The tree was designated as a Natural Asset of the City of Tokyo in 1930. Probably taken in the second decade of the Meiji Period (1878-1888).==Date:unknown, Place:Tokyo, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number92‐8‐0]

The hundred-step Otokozaka slope at Mt. Atago

The hundred-step Otokozaka slope at Mt. Atago

The stone stairs leading to Atago Shinto Shrine at the top of Mt. Atago. The steps in the centre, Otoko-zaka (Man Slope), are mentioned in old stories and songs as the place where Magaki Heikuro ascended and descended on horseback. The inclination of about 40 degrees seems too steep for a horse. The gently-sloping staircase on the right is Onna-zaka (Woman Slope). There was a third slope called Shin-zaka (New Slope) at the other side of the mountain. One of the photographs in the album sold by Baron Raimund von Stillfried Rathenitz, this may have been taken by Felix Beato in the early years of the Meiji Period.==Date:unknown, Place:Tokyo, Photo:R.
