FRANCE - NORMANDY - CALVADOS (14) - COLLEVILLE SUR MER: SITE 3: AMERICAN CEMETERY OF COLLEVILLE SUR MER. OFFICIALLY INAUGURATED IN 1956, THIS 70 HECTARE NECROPOLIS IS LOCATED ON THE HEIGHTS OVERLOOKING OMAHA BEACH. IT WAS DESIGNED BY HARBESON, HOUGH, LIVINGSTON & LARSON AND THE SPACE WAS ARRANGED BY LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT MARKLEY STEVENSON WHO ENSURED THAT, FROM ANY ANGLE, A ROW OF CROSSES COULD BE SEEN. AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE CEMETERY, A BRONZE STATUE 7 METERS HIGH, INSIDE THE SEMI-CIRCLE FORMED BY THE COLONNADE OF THE MEMORIAL, FACES THE SQUARES OF THE TOMBS. IT SYMBOLIZES THE SPIRIT OF AMERICAN YOUTH RISING FROM THE WAVES. THIS STATUE IS SURROUNDED BY PEBBLES SYMBOLIZING THE DIFFICULTY OF TANKS CROSSING THE BEACH. THE WHITE MARBLE STELES ARE IN THE SHAPE OF A LATIN CROSS OR IN THE SHAPE OF THE STAR OF DAVID FOR SOLDIERS OF THE JEWISH FAITH. THE BODIES OF 9,388 PEOPLE ARE BURIED IN THE CEMETERY, INCLUDING 307 UNKNOWN PEOPLE AND FOUR WOMEN. THESE PEOPLE MAINLY DIED ON THE DAY OF THE LANDING OR IN THE FOLLOWING

FRANCE. NORMANDY. CALVADOS (14) AERIAL VIEW OF OMAHA BEACH. IT WAS THE BEACH ON WHICH THE NORMANDY LANDINGS TOOK THEIR HEAVIEST TOLL OF D-DAY CASUALTIES (30 OF THE TOTAL ON 6 JUNE) AND, ALONG WITH JUNO BEACH, IT HAD THE HIGHEST CASUALTY RATE, WITH ALMOST 8 OF THE LANDED TROOPS DYING, MANY OF THEM BY DROWNING. 1,000 AMERICANS WERE KILLED AND THOUSANDS WOUNDED (THE EXACT TOLL REMAINS UNKNOWN), WITH 90 OF THE MEN IN THE FIRST WAVE KILLED OR WOUNDED. SITUATED BETWEEN UTAH BEACH (TO THE WEST) AND OMAHA BEACH (TO THE EAST), THE POINTE HAD BEEN FORTIFIED BY THE GERMANS AND, ACCORDING TO ALLIED AERIAL RECONNAISSANCE, WAS EQUIPPED WITH HEAVY ARTILLERY WHOSE RANGE THREATENED THE TWO NEIGHBOURING BEACHES. FRANCE. NORMANDY. CALVADOS (14) GOLD BEACH - REMAINS OF THE ALLIED ARTIFICIAL PORT B (FOR BRITISH) AT ARROMANCHES LES BAINS. MULBERRY HARBOUR WAS BUILT TO SUPPLY THE ALLIED ARMIES IN THE DAYS FOLLOWING THE NORMANDY LANDINGS. IN FACT, TWO PORTS WERE ASSEMBLED OFF THE BEACHES OF CALVADOS, BUT ONLY THE ONE AT ARROMANCHES WAS TO BECOME OPERATIONAL, THE SECOND OFF OMAHA BEACH BEING DESTROYED BY A STORM ON 19 JUNE 1944. THE CONSTRUCTION OF THIS PORT MEANT THAT THE ALLIES DID NOT HAVE TO TAKE A DEEP-WATER PORT DIRECTLY. MULBERRY HARBOUR WAS MADE UP OF SEVERAL LARGE ELEMENTS PREFABRICATED IN ENGLAND, TRANSPORTED AND ASSEMBLED ON THE NORMANDY COAST. THIS ARTIFICIAL PORT HAS OFTEN BEEN CREDITED WITH THE SUCCESS OF THE BATTLE OF NORMANDY AND PRESENTED AS AN EXAMPLE OF LOGISTICAL AND MILITARY GENIUS.
