BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan - Omurbek Zhanakeev smiles with his son in Bishkek on Oct. 26. Zhanakeev was freed along with four Japanese mining engineers after being held hostage for two months by Islamic rebels in Central Asia. Kyrgyz-born Zhanakeev worked as an interpreter for the four.

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan - This photo, taken Oct. 25 in Bishkek, shows Kyrgyz interpreter Omurbek Zhanakeev, who was freed along with four Japanese mining engineers on Oct. 24 after being held hostage for two months by Islamic rebels in Central Asia. Kyrgyz-born Zhanakeev, 35, started learning Japanese in Moscow while studying mining. He stayed in Japan for a year from September 1993. After returning to Kyrgyzstan, he participated in establishing a Japanese culture center and the compiling of a Kyrgyz-Japanese dictionary.
