US: Bright Streak Observed Over California as SpaceX Crew-11 Re-enters

A bright streak was observed across the night sky over Southern California early Thursday, January 15 as the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule carrying four astronauts made its fiery re-entry before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean off San Diego. The capsule returned NASA astronauts Zena Cardman and Mike Fincke, along with Japan’s Kimiya Yui and Russian cosmonaut Oleg Platonov, ending the Crew-11 mission about a month early due to a non-emergency medical condition affecting one crew member. NASA said the astronaut was stable and brought back to Earth for further evaluation.

The project is already two years in development, with its base located at the former British National Diving and Activity Centre (NDAC), an 80m-deep, 600m-long flooded quarry in Gloucester, England, which suddenly announced its closure in February 2022. TOKYO, Japan - Japan's Antarctic research expedition team successfully recovered on Dec. 30 two air study capsules launched by balloon that day to study the composition of carbon dioxide in the stratosphere above Japan's Showa Base in Antarctica. One capsule was launched to study the air composition at an altitude of 15 kilometers and the other to an altitude of 25 km. The capsules, recovered by helicopter from the Japanese Antarctic research ship Shirase, will be sent to Japan for analysis. Japan is the only country studying changes of carbon dioxide composition, a key factor in global warming, in the Antarctic stratosphere. The photo shows one of the air balloons launched on Dec. 30.

TOKYO, Japan - Japan's Antarctic research expedition team successfully recovered on Dec. 30 two air study capsules launched by balloon that day to study the composition of carbon dioxide in the stratosphere above Japan's Showa Base in Antarctica.
