SMBC to step up online banking security with new password system

TOKYO, Japan - Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. will step up computer security efforts for customers of its Internet banking by introducing a new system that automatically changes a password, which can be used only once, every minute, the bank said on Jan. 12. The new ''One-time Password'' system, to be introduced next month, will provide applicants from the bank's 6 million online customers with a device (in photo) incorporating software to automatically change six-digit passwords for them.

Computer student neither denies, admits launching virus

MANILA, Philippines - Onel de Guzman (L), a 23-year-old Filipino computer student who could be the author of the ''Love Bug'' virus that crippled computer e-mail systems worldwide, meets the press in Manila on May 11. He neither confirmed nor denied he wrote or unleashed the program. He did admit he had prepared a thesis proposal, ''Email Password Sender Trojan,'' but he stressed that because the project was rejected by his computer school, he did not develop it further. His sister Irene is on the right.

(220221) -- HOHHOT, Feb. 21, 2022 (Xinhua) -- A medical worker inputs password to enter a COVID-19 testing laboratory in Hohhot, north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Feb. 20, 2022. Hohhot launched its third round of COVID-19 nucleic acid testing on Monday. Mobile PCR laboratories and air-inflated laboratories have been put into use to improve testing efficiency. Authorities started building a testing site in Saihan District on Feb. 17, and the facility was in operation in just one day. The testing site can conduct a maximum of one million tests per day in its six laboratories, where more than 130 staff members work in three shifts to provide 24/7 coverage. (Xinhua/Peng Yuan)
