The Przewalski's horse is listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species and is under first-class national protection. Once extinct in China due to excessive poaching and environmental degradation, the Przewalski's horses were reintroduced to the country from Britain, Germany and the United States starting in the mid-1980s, and were raised in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Gansu Province. Since 2024, a total of 18 Przewalski's horses in three batches from Xinjiang have been released into the Helan Mountain Nature Reserve in Ningxia, as a way to protect the endangered species. On April 13 this year, a Przewalski's horse gave birth to a foal, marking the first case of breeding after the reintroduction of the Przewalski's horse in the nature reserve. Endangered wild horses on comeback in Mongolia

Endangered wild horses on comeback in Mongolia

ULAN BATOR, Mongolia - Przewalski horses, the last surviving wild ancestors of the domestic horse, graze on pasture in Mongolia's Hustain Nuruu National Park 100 kilometers west of Ulan Bator. Once nearly extinct in the wild, Przewalski horses have been kept in zoos and private parks around the world. Under international projects to reintroduce them in the wild, however, the herd in the national park grew to 84 in 2000, and is now about 140. The horse, known as the Takh in Mongolian, is roughly 120 centimeters high and has a short, erect mane.

Qinghai Lake, located in northwest China's Qinghai Province, is China's largest inland saltwater lake. It is a major transit point for migratory birds from Central Asia to India and East Asia to Australia. It also serves as an important winter home for waterbirds on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Qinghai Lake is a crucial body of water to maintain ecological security in the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It is also a natural barrier for controlling the eastward spread of desertification. The improving ecosystem of the lake in recent years has benefited a variety of plant and animal species. (Photo by Xing Zhi/Xinhua)
