It is the first Confucius Institute in the country. Tens of thousands of students have studied the Chinese language and culture here. A ceremony was held at the Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) in the Chilean capital Santiago. Roberto Lafontaine, executive director of CLEC, said that the Confucius Institute started in Chile in 2007 thanks to the efforts of the University of Santo Tomas.
