An oiran (a courtesan)

An oiran (a courtesan)

The oiran was a courtesan in the Edo Period. Formerly the term was applied only to high-ranking courtesans, but later it became a general term for all prostitutes. This photograph depicts the former. The dress she wears is a parade of luxurious items such as saya-silk twill, crepe, habutae-silk, rasha-thin silk, velvet, and gold-brocaded satin damask. Courtesans often wore six combs each in front and back of a long floral comb in the hair.==Date:unknown, Place:unknown, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number72‐84‐0]
