Czech President Milos Zeman lit a bonfire this evening, on Saturday, September 14, 2019, in honour of the first Czechoslovak president Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, who died 82 years ago, after a commemorative event at Masaryk's grave at the Lany cemetery. The bonfire was also lit by Cardinal Dominik Duka, former foreign minister Karel Schwarzenberg (TOP 09), photo, and Lany Mayor Karel Sklenicka. Schwarzenberg said Masaryk's principles were not respected in society. He said the country had democracy but not enough democrats. He said he hoped that a new generation of democrats would grow up and realise that freedom and democracy which Masaryk brought to the country are not taken for granted and that every generation has to fight for them. The Masaryk bonfires were for the first time lit in municipalities all over the country in 1935 on his 85th birthday. Masaryk died in 1937. Bonfires were then lit several times, but the tradition was cancelled after the Czechoslovak communist coup in 1948 and started again only in 2001. (CTK Photo/Vit Simanek)

Slovak society changed its opinion of journalists after reporter Jan Kuciak and his fiancee were murdered in February 2018, according to the police probably because of his investigative work, Czech journalist Pavla Holcova has told CTK on Tuesday, February 19, 2019. Many more people realise now what the role of a journalist is. That it is not to run down a politician, but bring pieces of information based on which people may decide whether to vote for the politician in elections or not, whether to trust him or not, said Holcova who founded the Czech centre for investigative journalism and focused together with Kuciak on the activities of Italian mafia in Slovakia. The project of Stories of Injustice or A Month of Film at Schools describing the events of the 1948 Communist coup starts with the decoration of three contemporaries for their opposition to the Communist regime today, on Thursday, November 1st, 2018, organiser Karel Strachota has told journalists. The prizes are given to Milos Rejchrt (centre), Anna Honova and Frantisek Rudl in memoriam. Young people should realise that democracy is not granted, that one has to care for it. This is important especially at the time it is weakened, Strachota, the director of the educational programme One World At Schools, from the NGO People in Need, said. Dissident Milos Rejchrt, 72, a Protestant priest, had to make his living as a stoker under the Communist regime. He was one of the first Czechs to have signed the Charter 77.
