TOKYO, Japan - Kikuko Tsumura (R), 30, won the 140th Akutagawa Prize for promising new writers of serious fiction on Jan. 15 for her work ''Potos Raimu no Fune'' (The Boat of Lime Pothos). The 140th Naoki Prize, another prestigious literary award for seasoned writers of popular fiction, went to Arata Tendo (C), 48, for ''Itamu Hito'' (Mourners) and Kenichi Yamamoto (L), 52, for ''Rikyu ni Tazuneyo'' (Ask Rikyu).

TOKYO, Japan - Cherry blossoms at Hama-Rikyu Gardens in Tokyo's Minato Ward started blooming on March 18. In the background are high-rise buildings at the Shiodome commercial and business area. The Meteorological Agency declared the same day that cherry trees started blooming in Tokyo, Yokohama and Shizuoka, the second-earliest date for the three cities since data were first collected in 1953.

Shokintei of Katsura Rikyu Imperial Villa looking across the pond from the bridge. Shokintei was constructed as one of a series of additions to the villa started in 1641. Kobori Enshu was in charge of work on this second addition under orders from Prince Toshitada.
