The Vanderbilt Commodores defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide 40-35 on Saturday, October 5, at FirstBank Stadium in Nashville. After the victory, Vanderbilt fans tore down the goalpost and paraded it down Broadway before tossing it into the Cumberland River.

A heavy rain shower came down shortly before the race, but cleared up after the start. On the difficult stretch along the river Amstel, there was almost no wind, which was favorable for the athletes. Kenyan runners swept the podium in the men's race. The 25-year-old Belet triumphed in a time of 2:04:18. The second place went to Cybrian Kotut in 2:04:34, while Bethwel Chumba finished third in 2:04:37. Belet broke open the race after 30 kilometers after stepping on the acceleration and finished on his own in the Olympic Stadium. Belete emerged as the winner in the women's category in 2:18:21.
