Michinoku Bank ordered to step up customer data protection

SENDAI, Japan - Kazuo Harada, president of Michinoku Bank in northern Japan, is summoned by the Tohoku Local Finance Bureau on May 20. The Aomori-based bank has been ordered by financial authorities to improve security measures to protect customers' information, following its loss of such data stored on CD-ROMs in April. It is the first such order issued by financial authorities under the personal privacy law, which went into force in April.

The leaders of six countries -- Japan, the United States, Britain, France, Germany and China -- issued a joint statement marking the completion of decoding of the human genome.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraqi officials display a massive report, titled ''Currently Accurate, Full and Complete Declarations,'' in Baghdad on Dec. 7. The report consists of 60 volumes totaling more than 11,800 pages and 12 CD-ROMs. Hussam Mohammed Amin, chief of the Iraqi National Monitoring Directorate, told reporters that Iraq has no weapons of mass destruction.
