Rakugo storyteller Ryusho dies at 82

TOKYO, Japan - Popular rakugo storyteller Shumputei Ryusho died of stomach cancer June 16 at a Tokyo hospital. He was 82. Ryusho, whose real name was Yasuo Akimoto, was known for creating about 100 new comic rakugo stories and appearing in movies. Ryusho's hobby was playing the trombone.

5 missing crew of fishing boat rescued off Kagoshima

KITAKYUSHU, Japan - Five Japanese fishermen who had been missing for five days in the East China Sea off Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan, are transferred March 26 from a Maritime Safety Agency (MSA) rescue boat to the MSA patrol vessel Osumi (at back). The crew of the 19-ton Ryusho Maru No. 7, from the town of Arie in Nagasaki Prefecture, were rescued in waters some 140 kilometers southwest of Amami-Oshima Island. This photo was released by the agency's 7th headquarters in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture.
