Secom unveils security robot to scare away intruders

TOKYO, Japan - Security service provider Secom Co. on July 22 unveiled a security robot (L) that can run as fast as humans and scare away intruders by spraying white smoke. The Secom Robot X is designed for use at spacious places such as airports and factories and will be leased for 300,000 yen per month, starting next fiscal year, Secom said. The four-wheeled robot is about one meter long and high and weighs 120 kilograms.

The robot, dubbed ''My Spoon,'' measures 28 centimeters long, 37 cm wide and 25 cm high, weighing 6 kilograms. It took SECOM and its medical equipment subsidiary 11 years to develop the product, which will hit the market on May 1. Available in three different types, the robot carries price tags higher than 380,000.

Matsushita unit to launch theft-resistant electric bicycle

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows an electric bicycle equipped with a Secom Co. global positioning system (GPS) designed to foil theft, which National Bicycle Industrial Co. will launch in August. The bicycle maker has developed a battery for its ViVi brand electric bicycles that can simultaneously supply electricity to the bicycle and recharge the COCO-SECOM portable GPS unit. The new bicycle will come in three models priced from 74,800 yen to 124,800 yen. (Kyodo)
