SYDNEY, Australia - The president of the Sydney Olympic organizing committee (SOCOG), Michael Knight, welcomes International Olympic Committee President Juan Antonio Samaranch to Sydney on Sept. 4 for the Games of the XXVIIth Olympiad. The 2000 Olympic Games get under way in Sydney on Sept. 15.

The Sydney Olympic organizing committee (SOCOG) is inviting volunteers by offering a chance to win a trip to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) headquarters or a motorcar and guaranteed tickets to dress rehearsals of the opening ceremony. The Sydney Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (SOCOG) unveils the flame torch for the 2000 Olympic Games on March 8. The shape of the 72-centimeter-long silver-color torch is based on a boomerang. The torch will be relayed by some 10,000 runners nationwide after the flame arrives in Australia on June 8, 2000. The torch will reach the main stadium on Sept. 15 the same year at the opening ceremony.
