SYDNEY, Australia - Volunteers are seen working near the Olympic village for athletes on a Sydney suburb Aug. 9. The Sydney Olympic organizing committee (SOCOG) is inviting volunteers by offering a chance to win a trip to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) headquarters or a motorcar and guaranteed tickets to dress rehearsals of the opening ceremony. The incentive scheme was announced following media reports that 1,200 volunteers were still needed to guide spectators around the competition venues.

The Sydney Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (SOCOG) unveils the flame torch for the 2000 Olympic Games on March 8. The shape of the 72-centimeter-long silver-color torch is based on a boomerang. The torch will be relayed by some 10,000 runners nationwide after the flame arrives in Australia on June 8, 2000. The torch will reach the main stadium on Sept. 15 the same year at the opening ceremony.
