Along Oura River

Along Oura River

The Oura and Sagarimatsu neighbourhoods of the Nagasaki Foreign Settlement are seen on the right and left, respectively, from the hillside to the south of Higashiyamate. The houses stand in an organized pattern at Sagarimatsu. The photograph reveals the juxtaposition of the settlement and Japanese neighborhoods. Matsugae Bridge and Benten Bridge, both built in 1889, are visible. This is the same as photograph #3856.==Date:unknown, Place:Nagasaki, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number73‐1‐0]

A view of the entrance of Oura River from slightly upstream. The bridge over Oura River is the Matsugae Bridge. There are many street lights on the wide road beside the river. The Western-style houses in the Sagarimatsu settlement can be seen clearly. The pines gave Sagarimatsu ( Drooping Pines ) its name.==Date:1871, Place:Nagasaki, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number21‐31‐0]

A picture of Oura waterfront street in the mid-Meiji era. Lights are set along the street, and trees have been planted. Business houses and foreign consulates stand along the street. The high architectural quality of the time can be seen. The bridge is Sagarimatsu Bridge (Matsugae Bridge) built in 1870.==Date:About 1897, Place:Nagasaki, Photo:Ogawa Kazumasa, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number8‐2‐0]

Downstream area of Oura River

Downstream area of Oura River

This photo is taken halfway up the Oura River looking downstream. The street light was particular to the foreign settlement. The bridge downstream is Benten Bridge and the mountain on the other side of Nagasaki Port is Mt. Inasa. A boat called ‘sanpan’, used to fetch goods from the ships offshore, is moored. The area, ‘Sagarimatsu’, was named after the pine tree on the left. The roof of Myogyoji Temple is barely discernable. The Sagarimatsu area was the foreign settlement’s town center with a bar for foreigners, a restaurant, an inexpensive international hotel, and a shop selling goods for foreigners and until around 1900, the place for locals to socialize.==Date:about 1874, Place:Nagasaki, Photo:Ueno Hikoma?, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images)

This is the Oura Bund viewed from the wharf in front of Oura No. 4 and No. 5. The two-storied building with red columns is the British Consulate at Oura No. 6 and the sign at the arch at the gate reads ‘H.B.M.COUNCIL.’ The presence of the wood and iron Sagarimatsu Bridge on the right indicates that this photo was taken after 1887. The steeple of Oura Church, The Glover house and Yongo-matsu pine tree in Minamiyamate are also visible.==Date:1887-1896, Place:Nagasaki, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images)

The Oura foreign settlement and Nagasaki Harbour seen from Don-no-Yama

This photo captures the area around the Oura River as viewed from mid-hill Mt. Donnoyama. At the mouth of the river stands Sagarimatsu Bridge, built in 1869 for the horse trail in the settlement. A bit upstream stands Benten Bridge built during the Bunkyu period (1861-1864) when the land was reclaimed for the Oura settlement. The U-shaped building visible next to Myogyoji Temple on the left hill is the Belle Vue Hotel. On the other side of the port is the Nagasaki Shipyard controlled by the Ministry of Engineering. Since the dormitory for foreign employees built in April 1874, doesn’t show in this photo, it must have been taken before then.==Date:1872, Place:Nagasaki, Photo:Ueno Hikoma, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images)
