UK: Peak District Wildfire Continues Near Errwood Reservoir, Roads Closed, Residents Warned

A wildfire continued near Errwood Reservoir in Peak District National Park as of Thursday, May 1. The fire, which started the day before, led to road closures and warnings for nearby residents to keep windows shut.

The Dying salt field

Dying Salt Fields (Miyagi, Kagawa, Ehime) Two-thirds of the nation's salt fields are disappearing. (Includes  scenes of salt fields in their final days in 1959, when two-thirds of the nation's salt fields were to disappear.   In Kagawa, salt overflowed in the open air instead of being stored in warehouses; people changed jobs as salt fields became driving ranges and vacant lots; in Watanoha salt fields, Miyagi Prefecture, young beachcombers changed jobs; women went from cottage industry to big business; old people went into oyster farming. The People of Okunoto

The people of Okunoto. Farmers build thousand paddy fields. Fishermen, who do not have a fishing port, make salt in pumping salt fields. There are also migrant workers and peddlers.   The people of Okunoto, despite the rough seas of the Sea of Japan and the poverty of their half-farming, half-fishing existence, build Senmaida rice paddies (paddies built on sloping land), people make salt the old-fashioned way, the last of the Agehama salt paddies where salt is pumped with labor, the cutting down of Asunaro forests, a tribe of fishermen turned plasterers, women peddling fish, and women peddling fish and vegetables at the morning market in Iida.
