Hanshin, Kintetsu launch train tour from Kobe to Ise-Shima

KOBE, Japan - Kintetsu Corp. and Hanshin Electric Railway Co. hold a ceremony at Hanshin's Sannomiya Station in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, on March 22, 2014, to launch a train tour service directly from the station in central Kobe to the Ise-Shima region of Mie Prefecture. The day tour using Kintetsu's express train (L) will be conducted only on weekends for the time being. (Kyodo)

KOBE, Japan - Orix BlueWave superstar Ichiro Suzuki (far L) and seven other members of the Pacific League team hold a charity auction on Oct. 16 to raise funds for the victims of Sept. 21 killer earthquake in Taiwan. The auction, held in the Sannomiya district of central Kobe, attracted over 1,000 fans and raised close to 1.7 million yen for the quake's victims.

Ikuta Shrine

Ikuta Shinto Shrine is located a few minutes on foot north of JR Sannomiya Station (present-day Chuo Ward). In the year 806, 44 families were designated to serve as shrine supporters (kanbe), and this is said to be the origin of the name Kobe (Kobe and kanbe are rendered with the same ideographs). The main hall is in the center, the grove behind it is the remainder of the great Ikuta forest. The forest has been famous since ancient times, and it is often mentioned in songs. It also the site of a 12th-century battle between the Genji and Heike clans.
