Illustration - Aerial View of France

FRANCE. HAUTE-CORSE (2B) BALAGNE, AERIAL VIEW OF THE VILLAGE OF OCCI. OCCI IS LIKE A GHOST TOWN. ITS HISTORY DATES BACK TO THE MIDDLE AGES, WHEN SARACEN ATTACKS DEVASTATED CORSICA. THE INHABITANTS OF THE COAST TAKE REFUGE IN THE HEIGHTS AND SETTLE THERE LITTLE BY LITTLE. IN 1589, THERE WERE 150 OF THEM LIVING IN OCCI, BUT 300 YEARS LATER, THERE WERE ONLY SIXTY LEFT. THE HAMLET ENDS UP BEING COMPLETELY ABANDONED IN FAVOR OF LUMIO, JUST BELOW; ITS LAST INHABITANT DIED THERE IN 1918. TODAY, THERE ARE ONLY GRANITE HOUSES WEAKENED BY TIME. AMONG THEM, THE CHAPEL OF THE ANNUNZIATA, RENOVATED IN 2002 THANKS TO PRIVATE DONATIONS. SOME MASSES ARE STILL CELEBRATED THERE Photo by Eric Volto/Only France/ABACAPRESS.COM
