Satellite View of flooding in northern Sumatra, Indonesia

Handout photo datetd on November 29, 2025 shows satellite view of Flooding in northern Sumatra. Cyclone Senyar formed during the night of 25-26 November 2025 in the Strait of Malacca, an area in which tropical cyclones had not been recorded for decades. The day after its formation, Senyar hit Indonesia, where it made landfall, causing flooding, landslides and more than 400 casualties in the north of the island of Sumatra. This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 29 November 2025, shows extensive inundation across Aceh province, with towns such as Lhoksukon and Panton Labu surrounded by floodwaters. Sediment-laden plumes discharged into the sea along the northern coast indicate substantial river outflow, caused by the heavy upstream rainfall. Huelva Estuary in Spain

Handout photo dated on November 16, 2025 shows Huelva Estuary in Spain. On 16 November 2025, one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites acquired this image of the Huelva estuary in south-western Spain, where the Tinto and Odiel rivers converge before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean. Recent rainfall has increased surface runoff and sediment transport, strengthening the contrasting outflow from the two rivers. The image shows distinct colour variations produced by differences in water chemistry and suspended materials. As these waters mix with tidal currents, they create gradual transitions and clearly defined plumes, highlighting the estuary’s dynamic behaviour. Copernicus Sentinel satellite data enables continuous monitoring of river plumes, estuarine dynamics, and land-sea interactions. This information is important for assessing the environmental impact of sediment transport, supporting water quality monitoring, and informing coastal zone management in fragile ecosystems. Satellite Views of Disastrous Flooding in The Philippines

Handout photo dated on November 12, 2025 shows Following the landfall of Typhoon Fung-wong on 9 November 2025, northern regions of the Philippines were affected by extensive flooding, with the Cagayan Valley among the worst hit areas. The typhoon brought intense rainfall, causing the Cagayan River to overflow its banks, submerging agricultural land, infrastructure, and urban areas, including the city of Tuguegarao. Several communities in the province of Cagayan were displaced, and damage to crops and transport infrastructure was reported across the region. This false colour image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 12 November 2025, shows the flooded areas along the Cagayan River. In this composite, vegetation appears in red, while water bodies and flooded areas are shown in shades of light blue and green. Additionally, sediment plumes can be seen at the river’s mouth near Aparri, where the river enters the Pacific Ocean. Photo by European Union, Copernicus Sentinel-2 imagery via ABACA

US: Glacial Outburst Flood Hits Juneau, Alaska, Forcing Evacuations

An overflowing glacial lake at the foot of Suicide Glacier north of Juneau, Alaska, caused the Mendenhall River to surge to record levels on Wednesday, August 13, flooding homes and streets and prompting evacuations. Such glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) occur when water trapped in a glacier-fed lake suddenly bursts through weak ice or soil barriers, sending a destructive surge of water, sediment, and debris downstream.

NGARI, CHINA - FEBRUARY 27, 2024 - Aerial photo taken on February 27, 2024 shows the weathered Zhada Tulin, one of the most typical and largest Tertiary formations in the world in Ngari Prefecture, Tibet, China. It is understood that the "soil mountain forest" landform is formed by the sediment layer of the lake basin in the ancient time under the influence of the Himalayan orogeny, with the decrease of the water level and the elevation of the lake basin, after billions of years of weathering and denudation.

Handout - Iron-rich sediment colors the red-orange waters of the Betsiboka River Delta in Madagascar in this image taken by an astronaut on the International Space Station on September 30, 2023. The sediment can clog waterways in the delta’s estuarial environment, but it can also form new islands that become colonized by mangroves. Despite its rusty color, this artery of water is important for biodiversity. Within the Betsiboka River Delta, the estuary supplies food, such as seagrasses, to the endangered green turtle and vulnerable dugong, or sea cow. Handout Photo by NASA via ABACAPRESS.COM

The Yellow River Chengni inkstone, with a history of more than 1,000 years, was listed as a Henan provincial intangible cultural heritage in 2007. Among the "four famous inkstones" in China, only Chengni inkstone is made of fine mud. The raw material of the Chengni inkstone is sediment from the Yellow River. It takes nearly 60 processes, such as mud selection, mud refining, design, blank-making, carving and roasting, to make one inkstone. You Xiaoxiao, a municipal-level inheritor of Yellow River Chengni inkstone in Xin'an County, passed on the family tradition of making inkstones after graduating from college. Speaking of the future, You said that she would bring her understanding into the design as the tradition could only flourish with the passion of the younger generation. (Xinhua/Xing Guangli)
