MOSCOW, Russia - Researchers in Kazakstan said their recent studies indicate an extensive area at a former Soviet nuclear testing site in the country's Semipalatinsk area has shown abnormal temperatures more 10 degrees higher than those of surrounding areas for unknown reasons. In this infrared photo taken in November 2000 from a satellite, the testing site is shown in the area encircled with black lines and higher temperatures were detected in the red and yellow areas.

HIROSHIMA, Japan - Paintings, poems and a videotaped peace message from Renata Izmailova, 17, physically handicapped due to exposure as a fetus to radiation from Semipalatinsk nuclear tests in Kazakstan, have been conveyed to Hiroshima. Her father Feat Izmailov, 47, attended this year's ban-the-bomb conference. The photo of the father and daughter was taken in Taldy-Kurgan, Kazakstan, in May 1998.
