GUANTANAMO BAY U.S. NAVAL BASE, Cuba - The first facility in the U.S. detention camp complex is left vacant and overgrown with vegetation at the U.S. naval base in Cuba's Guantanamo Bay on Sept. 2, 2009. Some well-known photos of blindfolded detainees in orange uniforms were taken at the facility, called Camp X-Ray, which was used for only four months until April 2002. The detainees were held in outdoor cage-like structures. A petty officer said, ''People still think of Camp X-Ray when you hear the word Guanatanamo, even though this place has been closed for years and living conditions of detainees have much improved since.''

SAPPORO, Japan - An amateur breeder shows two-week-old puppies of the Hokkaido dog breed, also known as the Ainu dog, designated as a Japanese natural treasure in 1937, in Sapporo's Kiyota Ward on Sept. 2, 2009. The dog, of the Spitz type, is rarely seen outside Japan. It was named after Japan's indigenous Ainu people who live in Hokkaido. The breed has been largely unchanged for tens of thousands of years. By the time of its 1937 designation, it was in danger of extinction.

TOKYO, Japan - Calligraphers create name bars for new House of Representatives members for use in the lower house's plenary chamber. Nine calligraphers from Nushisa Seisakusho, a lacquered tableware company in Tokyo's Taito Ward, on Sept. 2, 2009 worked on completing the bars for a total of 158 new lower house members by Sept. 9, company president Eiji Takemata said. The next parliamentary session is to begin Sept. 16.
