Gion Festival reaches its peak in Kyoto

KYOTO, Japan - The Shijo Street in the city of Kyoto's Shimokyo Ward is crowded by a number of tourists on July 16 as the Gion Festival reaches its peak. The temperature in Kyoto rose sharply to 36.7 C, the highest in this year's summer season.

Western view of Shijo Street (at the foot of the stone stairs of Gion) from the western gate of Yasaka Shrine. The stone statue of a guardian dog on the right was built by Iwata Chubei, Koizumi Shinshichi, and other residents of Kankoboko-cho, Shijo-dori-Muromachi-Higashi-iru in 1882 as a wish for family peace and prosperity. Northern view of Kamogawa River. These are restaurants and inns built on the stone reinforced riverbanks. Stairs and ladders are placed for easy access to the river. Wooden poles for summer balconies are also visible. The sandbank in the middle of the river where a person is standing was used to dry dyed fabrics in the sun. Souvenir shops at kiyomizu

The Gojosaka area leading to Kiyomizu temple in the centre of the Higashiyama district of Kyoto City has many slopes and is best known for its climbing ceramic kilns.Many Kyoto dolls were made in Azuma and Shijo,Kyogoku, and some of rather mediocre quality were made to the west of Gojohashi. The photo shows souvenir shops in Sannenzaka and a panel saying Kiyomizu specialty Nishiki doll sales and China sales . Merchandise are placed all over the tables sticking out to the road.
