Lolita fashion contest in Shimotsuma

Electric car runs over 1,000 km without recharge

TOKYO, Japan - Tadashi Tateishi celebrates after an electric car covered 1,003.184 kilometers without a recharge, a journey completed at an auto racing driving course in Shimotsuma, Ibaraki Prefecture, on May 23, 2010. The distance far surpasses the world record set by Tateishi's group, the Japan Electric Vehicle Club, last year. The Tokyo-based civic group plans to ask Guinness World Records to officially recognize the journey as the world's longest by an electric vehicle.

Pears stolen in Ibaraki Pref.

SHIMOTSUMA, Japan - A farmer points to the stem of a pear tree in a field in Shimotsuma, Ibaraki Prefecture, where about 2,000 pears were found stolen Aug. 13. Police suspect the pears were carried away in a truck and are investigating the case as one of theft.
