Hitachi Zosen, CPR plan new biodegradable plastic production

OSAKA, Japan - Hitachi Zosen Corp. and CPR Co. said on June 12 they will jointly produce biodegradable plastic from cassava (in photo), a plant grown in the tropics. The major shipbuilder and the Hyogo Prefecture-based maker of eco-friendly products believe the new plastic could become a cheaper alternative to conventional plastics made from petroleum-derived naphtha besides being less harmful to the environmental. Shipbuilder ordered to compensate ex-workers with lung disease

YOKOSUKA, Japan - Lawyers speak to supporters after the Yokohama District Court ordered Sumitomo Heavy Industries Ltd. on Oct. 30 to pay a total of 210 million yen in damages to former employees who say they contracted pneumoconiosis by working at its shipyards. It is the first ruling on a case involving lung disease linked to employment at a shipyard, according to the plaintiffs' lawyers. (Kyodo)

TOKYO, Japan - Universal Shipbuilding Corp. President Shinjiro Mishima (L) and IHI Marine United Inc. President Shigemi Kurahara hold a press conference in Tokyo on Jan. 30, 2012.
