KYIV, UKRAINE - DECEMBER 6, 2023 - The monument created by sculptor Oleh Tsos shows Ukrainian serviceman, Hero of Ukraine Oleksandr Matsiievskyi whom Russian invaders cynically executed after saying "Slava Ukraini" ("Glory to Ukraine") as seen during the inauguration ceremony at the Kyiv Fortress National Historical and Architectural Museum on the Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. On March 6, 2023, a 12-second video emerged of the shooting of a captive Ukrainian soldier by Russian occupiers. Later, the serviceman was identified as Oleksandr Matsiievskyi, a sniper of the Chernihiv Territorial Defence Force, who went missing near Krasna Hora, Donetsk Region, during the Battle of Bakhmut in late December 2022. It was reported that Russians executed the Ukrainian soldier on December 30, 2022.
