Inmate's alleged abuse at Nagoya Prison to be probed

NAGOYA, Japan - Prosecutors will begin investigating several officials at Nagoya Prison (shown in photo) in connection with the alleged abuse of a prisoner in September, sources close to the case said Nov. 8. The officials are suspected of attacking the 30-year-old male inmate Sept. 25 when placing him in solitary confinement due to unruly behavior, the sources said.

A 69-year-old Osaka man begins solo yacht trip

Ikuo Kashima, 69, sets sail on a solitary, around-the-world yacht trip Tuesday Sept. 15 from Tannowa Yacht Harbor in Osaka Prefecture in his 13.92-ton yacht. He plans to complete the voyage without stopping at any port along the way. Kashima, the first Japanese to cross solitarily both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans more than 30 years ago, said, ''I want to show what a 70-year-old man can achieve.''
