Fujimori leaves novelist's home, moves to condominium

TOKYO, Japan - Deposed Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori on March 5 leaves the home of his friend, Japanese novelist Ayako Sono (L), to move into an expensive condominium in downtown Tokyo. Fujimori had been living in Sono's house in Tokyo's Ota Ward since last November. Her husband Shumon Miura (2nd from L), also a novelist, joined her in bidding farewell to Fujimori.

'Animals' lose Kagoshima Pref. eco lawsuit

KAGOSHIMA, Japan - Hiroaki Sono, one of the plaintiffs who filed a suit calling for a court order to halt the construction of golf courses on Amami-Ohima Island, holds a press conference in Kagoshima, southwestern Japan, on Jan. 22 after the Kagoshima District Court ruled against them. The suit, filed in 1995, drew public attention because four of the plaintiffs were listed as an Amami rabbit, a jay, a thrush and an Amami woodcock. The animal names on the official documents were followed by ''known as'' and the plaintiffs' names.

NGO urges Fujimori to go home with plane ticket

TOKYO, Japan - About 50 people from Japan, Peru and five other countries march Jan. 16 to the house in Tokyo where deposed Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori is staying, to hand him a letter urging him to return home as well as an economy-class air ticket to Peru. The demonstrators from the Japanese civic organization Peace Boat were unable to hand over the ticket, with police in front of the house in Tokyo's Ota Ward maintaining nobody was home. The house belongs to Japanese writer Ayako Sono.

Japanese-Peruvians rally in Tokyo, demand Fujimori go home

TOKYO, Japan - A group of Japanese-Peruvians staged a demonstration Dec. 10 in Tokyo's busy Shibuya district, demanding deposed Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori go home and answer to allegations about human rights abuses under his administration. The Japanese-Peruvians, along with Japanese members of a citizens group calling for democratic reforms in Peru, chanted ''Fujimori, go home.'' Fujimori, who is staying at the Tokyo home of novelist Ayako Sono, refuses to return to Peru, where authorities want him to face trial over allegations that he amassed illegal funds while in office.

Fujimori ready to testify in Japan on allegations

TOKYO, Japan - Deposed Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori tells reporters Dec. 2 he is prepared to testify in Japan on allegations of amassing secret funds but reiterates his refusal to return home to give testimony. ''I will willingly provide information while in Japan,'' he said at a Tokyo park near the home of Japanese novelist Ayako Sono, where he is currently staying.
