Japanese MSDF submarine 'Soryu' at launching ceremony

TOKYO, Japan - The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force's submarine "Soryu" is launched at a ceremony at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd.'s shipyard in Kobe, western Japan, in December 2007. The sophisticated Soryu-class sub is seen as a potential candidate as Australia, keeping a watchful eye on China's expanding maritime military power, considers replacing its aging submarine fleet.

TOKYO, Japan - A U.S. team reported on Oct. 29 the discovery of wreckage of four Japanese aircraft carriers sunk during the Battle of Midway in 1942. This is a file photo of Kaga, one of the four Japanese carriers found by Nauticos Corp., a deep-sea surveying firm based in Maryland, and the U.S. Navy's Naval Oceanographic Office. The other three Japanese carriers found are the Akagi, Soryu and Hiryu.
