Frankfurt customs confiscates violinist Janke's Stradivarius

TOKYO, Japan - Violinist Yuki Manuela Janke, a resident of Germany, poses with a Stradivarius violin in Tokyo in September 2012. The violin was confiscated by customs officers at the international airport in Frankfurt later in the month, the Nippon Music Foundation, a Japanese entity leasing the instrument, said Oct. 4, 2012. The German customs authority said it will keep the violin, one of the most coveted makes, unless Janke pays a duty of 120 million yen, on the grounds it is an item that needs to be declared for taxation.

Making violin from tsunami debris

TOKYO, Japan - Photo taken Feb. 21, 2012, in Tokyo shows Muneyuki Nakazawa, a violin maker known globally for restoration and appraisal of Stradivarius and other rare instruments, making a violin from wooden debris from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami found in the city of Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture. A project is under way to have 1,000 violinists from around the world play at various venues in Japan and abroad with violins made from such debris, with the first performance to be given by Ivry Gitlis, an Israeli-born violinist, at a first-anniversary ceremony in Rikuzentakata on March 11.
